This was another college writing prompt that I had a lot of fun with. This one ended up in my creative writing portfolio at the end of my B.A. degree. Originally written in October 2015.

When you retreat so far into your own mind

To a place where time slows and reality dims,

Your imagination wanders—anything is possible.

You can be Gulliver in Lilliput,

A giant among men;

Or maybe more like Jack among the clouds,

A man among giants.

This is where the hunger in the pit of your stomach

And a dull pain at the back of your head

Add to your visualization—the scene changes.

You are now the Count of Monte Cristo,

Locked in a harsh cell, awaiting your fate;

Or maybe you’re an explorer lost in the desert,

Searching forever for an oasis.

This is where the voices of the people downstairs

And the people out on the street

Become an inspiration—a town awaits.

You are Belle, stuck in a provincial town,

Nose in a book, looking for a way out;

Or maybe you’re a small-town girl

Lost in the Big City, not sure where to go.

This is where everything going on around you,

Both in your mind and not,

Transform into a creation never created before.

You are now in the land of myth,

Face to face with a chimera;

Or maybe you’re in science fiction,

Alien races filling the area.

This is where Time stretches on and on,

And slows down to something less than a crawl,

And you can feel Eternity seep cold into your bones.

And then it stops. Snaps. Drops.

And you jolt back to reality.
