All I Need is Time
This was a college poetry assignment, but I had a lot of fun with it. Written December 2015.
Clock glows,
Seconds pass.
Numbers change—
BEEP! BEEP! BEEP!
Stop the sound,
Got an hour;
The day begins.
Jump out of bed,
Skip the shower—
Save half an hour!—
Messy tail to hide the mess.
Throw on clothes,
Whatever I find—
Five minutes less!
Ten minutes to
Eat breakfast (toast),
Grab bag (by the door),
Keys (check),
Phone (check),
Run out the door:
Forty-six minutes to go.
Jump into the car and
Turn it on—Shit! Coffee pot!
Run back, turn it off—
Four minutes lost.
Make it up with the drive,
Speeding, zipping, in and out,
Thirty-four minutes on the road.
Pull into the parking spot—
Eight minutes to go.
Grab stuff and run:
Across the lot,
Through the door,
Eyes on the floor,
No time to talk.
Up the stairs,
To the room,
Into my seat—
The bell rings: relief!
Out of breath and out of time:
I still made it and I’m fine.
